GSM meaning or full form is the Global system for mobile communications. It was developed to describe the protocols for 2G digital cellular networks.

This cel-GSMlular network was used by mobile devices such as mobile phones and tablets. Global system mobile for mobile communication was first ever developed in Finland in December 1991.

The global system for mobile communication became the global standard for mobile communications by the mid-2010s where it achieved more than 90% of market share and it operated in more than 190 countries and territories.

The European Telecommunication standard institute developed a standard. It is a standard which they named as GSM or The Global system for mobile communications.

The 2G or second-generation networks were developed as a replacement for first-generation connection analog cellular networks.

 About GSM

  • The global system for mobile communication was standard which was before described as a digital circuit-switched network.
  • This network was optimized for full-duplex voice telephony.
  • In the coming times, the global system for mobile expanded.
  • The expansion of GSM was to include data communication. This data communication expansion of GSM happened first by circuit-switched transport. After the circuit-switched transport, it happened for packet data transport. These were through general packet radio services as well as Enhanced data rates for GSM evolution.
  • 3GPP developed the third generation UPTS standards and then the fourth-generation 4G came as LTE advanced version and the fifth generation 5G standards that don’t form part of the ETSI GSM standard.

GSM history

  • To develop a European standard for digital cellular voice telecommunications in 1983. It was when the European conference of postal and telecommunications administration built up the Groupe Special mobile or GSM committee. It later provided a permanent technical support group in Paris.
  • In 1987 a memorandum of understanding in Copenhagen was signed by 15 representatives from 13 European countries. It was signed to develop a general cellular telephone system across Europe.
  • It took place when the EU rules were passed. The rules were passed to make this GSM a compulsory standard. A continental standard was developed which became a unified, open, and standard-based network. This network was bigger and larger than it was in the United States.
  • In February 1987 the first agreed GSM technical specification was produced by Europe.  Political support for GSM with the Bonn declaration on global information network in May and the GSM MoU was tabled for signature in September by Ministers from the four big EU countries.
  • This was 38 weeks when the whole of Europe had been brought behind GSM in unity and speed. This was guided by four public officials as Armin Silberhorn from Germany, Stephen Temple from the UK, Renzo Failli from Italy, and Philippe Dupuis from France.
  • Thomas Haug and Phillippe Dupuis were awarded the 2018 James Clerk Maxwell Medal. It was awarded to them for their leadership in the development of the first-ever international mobile communication standard.
  • Now this GSM or 2G network has been evolved into 3G, 4G, and 5G networks.
