What is the full form of LED ?

LED Full Form: Light Emitting Diode

Spread the love

LED meaning or Full form is Light Emitting Diode.

LED means light-emitting diode is a semiconductor light source that Emits lights when applying a predefined voltage.

Basically, this is a PN-Junction Diode, which emits light when a voltage above the threshold voltage is applied.

LED is used in much electronic equipment today due to its very good quality.

LED is the latest invention, used by most people today.
This is the reason why the popularity and use of LEDs are increasing day by day.

Construction of LED

The LED is made by merging P and N-type semiconductor materials.

As we know, silicon and germanium are used in a normal semiconductor diode, but this semiconductor material is not used in light-emitting diodes.
Gallium arsenide (GaAs) or gallium arsenide phosphate(GaAsP) is used in its place.

This material is used in LED due to its special characteristics. This material has this property, it emits light, not heat when applying voltage.

LED is manufactured as a forward bias device.

principle and working of LED

LED works on the principle of Electroluminescence.

The Property of semiconductor material by which it converts electrical energy into Light Energy is called Electroluminescence.

as said earlier LED is a Forward Bias semiconductor device, which means it will start working when the p terminal of the diode will be connected to the positive potential of a battery, and the N terminal of the device to the negative terminal of the battery.

so the holes in the P side experience repulsion because of the positive voltage applied by the battery and the electrons in the N side experiences repulsion due to negative supply by the Battery.

due to this repulsion, the electrons start moving from the conduction band to the Valance band.

During their movement Electrons releases some energy, but in the case of a LED, it emits Light energy, because of the characteristic of the material of LED.

Different colours of LED

Today LED is available in all colours, and we can choose LED according to our requirement.
But you would be surprised to know that in the beginning, the LED was only red, and over time the rest of its colours were also made.
But the hardest thing was to get the white colour from the LED and only recently got success a few years back.
After which LED started to be used the most in-home lighting.

Uses of LED

Today, LED is being used in many places, some of which are prominent examples.

  • Tv backlighting
  • Smartphone backlighting
  • Led display
  • Automotive lighting
  • Dimming light
  • LED wallpaper
  • Home lightning
  • Home decoration

Benefits of LED

LED has many advantages over old light, due to which LED has become so much more popular today, some of the major advantages are as follows.

Energy Efficient-

Of all the light sources that have been discovered so far, the most energy-efficient LED is

You can get a sense of how energy efficient the LED is from the old bulb, that a 9 watt LED gives more light than a 100 Watt old bulb.

Today LED has become so much energy efficient that, 303 lumens light can be obtained by spending one watt of electricity

Low energy consumption is also one of the reasons why LCD TVs are being replaced by LED TVs today.

Long Life-

the LED light can be used for a long time
This is also a very big reason, that LED is so famous, and is used everywhere

Today there are some LED lights that you can use for more than 100000 hours.

Environment Friendly-

The LED is also environmentally friendly as it does not have mercury, lead or Cadmium like a CFL bulb.

Low Price-

The price of LED is very low today, and with research is becoming less every day
Today, the price of a 9 watt LED bulb is close to ₹ 50.

Recyclable-

LED lights can be recycled easily and it also costs less.

Compact size and Light-weight-

LED weighs very little, and is very small in size, due to which it can be used everywhere.

LED FAQs

Does LED work on AC or DC current?

LED works on DC supply only.

LED works only in forward bias, so it must get current in one direction only to work properly.

In most of our electronic equipment where LED is used, we convert AC current to DC and supply LED.

If we supply AC current to the LED, then the LED will start blinking because the direction of current in AC continues to change.
