RAM full form or meaning is Random Access Memory.
RAM is also called Primary memory or temporary storage of a computer or Mobile and this is one of the most fundamental parts of these electronic devices.
There are three main components of any computer, RAM, ROM and CPU.
We store any information on the ROM permanently, and when we have to do some work, we transfer that information to the RAM, and RAM transfers it to the CPU.
Stacked RAM has a very high data transfer rate, so the CPU can quickly receive and send any data, and can do any work quickly.
That is why it is often said that the more RAM in your mobile or computer, the faster your device will be able to work.
Today many mobile companies are providing up to 12 GB of RAM in their mobiles, the same computer companies are providing up to 32 GB of RAM to the people.
History of RAM
In early computers, delay lines, mechanical counters, or relays were used as random access memory, with many of the biggest drawbacks, such as being able to store very little data, and the order in which the data was stored. Used to read the data in the same order.
The first workable RAM was the Williams tube, built-in 1947, which was the first random access memory to store data on the face of a cathode ray tube as electrically charged sports.
But Robert Daynard is said to be the inventor of random access memory, which patented this important component in 1968.
The RAM made by Robot Dinner was the first stage of today’s modern RAM, using transistors.
Working of RAM
RAM is the working memory of any computer, instead of a regular SSD memory, because RAM is extremely fast.
A memory chip or RAM is an integrated circuit made of millions of capacitors and transistors.
In today’s advanced RAMs a transistor and capacitor are paired together to create a memory cell.
A memory cell represents or stores a single bit of information.
And inside ram billions of these memory cells has been made, depending upon the memory size of RAM.
What does ram do?
RAM is the instant memory on which the computer is working at that time.
For example, if we want to do some work on Photoshop on our computer, then the Photoshop application will be installed on the hard drive of our computer.
but as soon as we click on this application to work on it, this Photoshop application will Temperately be copied on RAM, from where the processor will be able to run this application easily, then when we finish our work, and we will close this Photoshop application, then it will be completely erased from the RAM.
Similarly, RAM also works on our mobile, so that we can run any application easily.
For example, if you have downloaded a game on your mobile, it will be saved in your mobile’s main memory, but when you play that game, then that game will come to RAM at that time so that the processor can easily process that game, and you can have a good game experience
So RAM is fast memory, which delivers data to the processor very fast, and receives any data from the processor, due to which our computer or mobile works faster without hanging.
That is why when we open many applications simultaneously on a computer whose RAM is less, then it hangs.
Types of RAM
Two types of RAM are used in today’s modern computers-
Static RAM (SRAM)- Six MOSFETs is used to store a bit of data in SRAM, this kind of RAM costs more to build, but it consumes less power and is much faster.
This type of RAM is used in supercomputers or very large organization computers.
Dynamic ROM (DRAM)-
one MOSFETs is used to store a bit of data in DRAM, this kind of RAM costs less to build, but it consumes higher power than SRAM and is much slower than SRAM.
Nowadays all the common people use computers, this RAM is used in them.
Benefits of RAM
- Today the speed with which we are able to work on our computer or mobile has been possible due to RAM.
- RAM is very power efficient, and it consumes very less power.
- RAM does not have any moving part, so the chances of its deterioration are very low, and it does not make any sound whatsoever.
Drawbacks of RAM
- In case of power cut due to any reason, all the data on the RAM gets deleted, which can be very difficult at times.
- By the way, RAM is not usually messed up, but if it ever gets damaged then it is almost impossible to repair it, and we have to replace it.
- RAM is the most expensive of all types of storage, so even today it remains less than the main storage in our device.
